The New $4.99 Trader Joe's Freezer Find I'm Stocking From Now On

There’s something about croquettes that feels luxurious. Maybe it’s their golden hue or knowing how much work goes into making them. And it’s that second reason that often keeps me from topping and frying them myself, which makes Trader Joe’s Papas Rellenas a treasure I keep in my stash.

This recent freezer find is inspired by the Peruvian classic and simply means “stuffed potatoes.” It’s made with a filling of ground beef mixed with onion, garlic, and diced red and green peppers. The savory meat filling is reminiscent of the Mexican picadillo I grew up eating, right down to the rich tomato base and peppery oregano.

Why I Love Trader Joe's Papas Rellenas

When it comes to tucking into something, I always find it very satisfying to break through the crispy crust, especially knowing all the texture and flavor that lies beneath. I'm talking a generous layer of soft potatoes, followed by a generous filling of meat. It makes for a satisfying bite, or five, because these things are truly enormous.

You get four jumbo kibbles in each box for just $4.99. They're vacuum-packed in two packs of two, so unopened portions stay fresh until you're ready to finish them (up to three months), but I have a feeling they'll disappear quickly once you try them.

How I Serve Trader Joe's Papas Rellenas

In addition to their mouthwatering taste and texture, I love how quick and easy they are to make. By “make,” I mean popping them in the oven or air fryer before plating them. It couldn’t be easier, which makes them a great option for a busy weeknight meal or an impressive appetizer for guests.

With multiple packages, you'll easily have dinner for four when served with a green or Caesar salad to offset the richness of the papas rellenas. My favorites include the Peruvian salad of chopped corn and peppers called solterito and a big bowl of cooked pinto beans topped with fresh tomatoes, cilantro, onion and sliced avocado.

Speaking of guests, whether they're dropping by unexpectedly or you're looking to create a menu for your next get-together that won't leave you exhausted before the party even starts, these South American croquettes are an easy and delicious appetizer that everyone will enjoy.

Leftovers (unlikely) will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days when placed on a paper towel in an airtight food storage container, but my household has never had a problem finishing the entire box in one sitting.
