Description

This easy potato bake is a creamy, comforting dish made with simple, budget-friendly ingredients. Perfect as a side or a hearty main, it features tender layers of potatoes in a rich, flavorful sauce, topped with melted cheese and a golden, crisp finish. Ideal for family dinners, gatherings, or anytime you want a satisfying meal without fuss.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds (about 900 grams) russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream

  • 1 cup (100 grams) shredded cheddar cheese

  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Arrange the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the dish.

  • In a small bowl, stir together the cream, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Pour this mixture evenly over the potatoes.

  • Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese across the top. Add the butter cubes evenly over the surface.

  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

  • Remove the foil and continue baking for another 20 to 25 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbling.

  • Let the bake rest for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

For the best texture and flavor, slice the potatoes evenly so they cook at the same rate. Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes after baking — this helps the creamy sauce thicken and makes serving easier. If you want to add extra flavor, consider layering in fresh herbs or thinly sliced onions. Leftovers are best reheated in the oven to keep the top crisp.
